Defiance

Edward Zwick (Blood Diamond, The Last Samurai, Glory) directs another historical underdog story with Defiance, starring Daniel Craig (Quantum of Solace), Liev Schreiber (The Painted Veil) and Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot).

Did you attend the member screening? What did you think?

I may have a contrarian view of this film, but I found it to be Holokitsch (or hollow kitsch, which may be redundant). It shamelessly pushes every button and exploits every genre cliche..did you have any doubt that the "bad" brother would arrive with his cavalry and save he day? The modest gestures toward establishing the reality of a jewish life in the shtetl, the facelessness of the "Nazi" enemy, the swelling string orchestra of Thomas Newton Howard and the throbbing violin of Joshua Bell, all add up to a feeling of improper exploitation. By the way, do you agree that Craig at the end of the film looks amazingly like Spencer Tracy?

Personally I enjoyed the film - number one its history and we need to be reminded of what happened so hopefully we will learn from it. When we were all walking out like cattle after the movie I was thinking to myself what if these were the people I would be with like the movie? What experiences would we go through - would we react the same way as in the movie? It's hard watching a movie like this especially with it really happening to so many Jews. Let’s pray for them and the family survivors.
