Oscar shortlist...shorter

The Oscars have whittled down their list of 65 Best Foreign Film nominees to 9 (to be whittled to 5 on Jan.22), and SURPRISE! They're all playing at the Palm Springs International Film Festival!

The Baader Meinhof Complex, Germany
The Class, France
Departures, Japan
Everlasting Moments, Sweden
The Necessities of Life, Canada
Revanche, Austria
Tear This Heart Out, Mexico
Three Monkeys, Turkey
Waltz with Bashir, Israel

Have you seen any of these? Do you plan to?

Hoping that "Necessities of Life" is at Best of Fest, because we couldn't fit it in to a great schedule, and "Waltz With Bashir" is a weekend top pick. Of the ones seen, we dcan't fathom why "Three Monkeys" is on the list at all, and "The Class" has no chance . "Departures" is very good, ", but "Revanche" and "Everlasting Moments" are more complete works of film. "tear This Heart Out" and "Baader Menhoff" are big, big epics, but that doesn't make them all that special. If I had a vote, I'd give "Everlasting Moments" a 0.01 nod over "Revanche", but if I was forced to make a bet, here in the year of Obama, I'd say that "Waltx With Bashir" will win the Academy Award. Of course, this is coming from someone who is still miffed that "Crash" won over "Brokeback Mountain".

In fact, YES - the Oscar 9 shortlist will be playing on Monday during Best of the Fest. Times TBA. Read the press release.

Thanks for the rundown, Dan! (And I'm with you on Crash-- I found it pretentious and insulting)

We also saw 3 Monkeys & were not that impressed. Our favorite from last weekend was South Desert, from Chile. A new young first time director.
Really well acted & beautiful to watch & a great story !!

The monkeys r in a 'class' of their OWN! Only the intellect hopefull could give this better than a PASS grade!

Looking forward to Marvelous Monday, when all 9 on the Oscar shortlist will be screened, we discovered a delightful little gem - "Showgirls, Provincetown MA"
It shows again on Saturday...go see it. You'll smile, you'll laugh. Hell, you'll howl. The genuine enthusiasm and joy of the film's subjects, and of the Director, gladdens the heart. With a gazillion films being made every year, how fortunate we are that this one made it to the top of the pile.

Several very good documentaries this year. "Prodigal Sons", "The English Surgeon", and "for my wife . . ." stayed with me. Amazing people with compelling stories.

Dan: I know what you mean about the films that win Oscars. I'm still reeling from "Titanic"'s win over "L.A. Confidential".

I think Eldorado was best of the fest and was completely overlooked by many; not enough buzz, I suppose. Everyone whom I talked to who had seen thought it was in a class by itself. I recommend it highly and hope it gets wide distribution in the U.S.
