The Secret Life of Bees

The pun is so obvious, it has to be said.

After watching tonight's Special Member Screening, what is the buzzzz on The Secret Life of Bees -- the adaptation of Sue Monk Kidd's novel about a girl (Dakota Fanning) who escapes her father when taken in by the independent Boatwright sisters (Queen Latifah, Sophie Okonedo and Alicia Keys)?

This is not the kind of film that calls for an overly technical analysis, though the music was perfect, the costumes authentic, and the settings natural for the time. This one is all about the story, and the dominant themes are personal ones - love, betrayal, abandonment, loss, and hope. While there is the dark background of the nascent days of civil rights for Blacks in The South, this is family tale. It might be a little schmaltzy at times, but, hey, it's a movie. Dakota Fanning had a big, big part to fulfill, and she did an adequate job, at least as well as any other child actor would have done. Queen Latifah and Alicia Keys were marvelously subdued and Sophie Okenedo might have earned another Best Supporting Actress nomination. This one gets a B+ from me, worth the time and the money.
